Margaret is a retired specialist sexual health physician. She worked in Family Planning for 34 years and the Wellington Clinic is named in her honour. In 1976 she studied vasectomy and venereology in London and worked in the Wellington Sexual Health Service for 28 years. She is a past President of the New Zealand Sexual Health Society. For 17 years she was an abortionist at Parkview Clinic, Wellington Hospital. In 1999 with four other doctors she founded Istar Ltd, a not for profit company which imports Mifegyne (mifepristone) into New Zealand for medical abortion. She continues to be involved as a Company Director. She is a past President of ALRANZ (Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand). In her retirement she has been researching the history of abortion in New Zealand and has published three books on this topic. She has a broad interest in sexual and reproductive rights and was an inaugural Trust Board member of ITANZ (The Intersex Trust Aotearoa New Zealand). She has two adult children and three granddaughters.
